CHAPTER NINE

Hunter told himself off as he rearranged the plates on the kitchen counter yet again. He had no reason to be nervous—Brigid simply wanted to meet Ian properly, to get to know him a little—and yet he was. He wanted this to go well. This was his closest family and his mate—they were both very important to him.

He had a large spread on for their brunch, including virgin mimosas and bloody marys. The eggs he would cook up once Brigid was here and they were ready to eat. He was not a fan of cold cooked eggs. That was just a nope for him.

“This is beautiful, love. It looks so appetizing.” Ian finished arranging the flowers, and they were lovely, beautifully placed in the vase.

He looped an arm around Ian’s waist and tugged him close. “Thank you, lad. I’m sure she’ll be happy no matter what.” He was stressing over nothing and he knew it. He kissed Ian, the distraction from his own thoughts more than welcome.

“I hope she likes me. I want your family to welcome me.”

“Of course she’s going to like you—I can’t imagine anyone not.” Ian was such a lovely lad, charming and charismatic without even trying. Not that he was biased about the lad at all.

“You’re her brother. That’s reason enough.” Ian offered him a nervous smile. “What if she thinks I trapped you?”

“Oh, she knows me better than that, Ian. If anything, she’s going to be worried that I trapped you.” He’d already been berated for taking up with Ian in the first place, though he believed she understood now this wasn’t some whim.

“Okay. Well, you didn’t, so… we’ll just have to be a unified front.”

“United in front, united in back…” Hunter waggled his eyebrows outrageously, wanting to make Ian laugh—he didn’t want his own nervousness to make Ian nervous.

He got the laugh he was looking for too.

Which was the perfect time for Brigid to arrive. She knocked lightly, coming in and smiling when she saw them. “Don’t the two of you look cozy and happy?”

“We do. We are. Hello, sister.”

Ian offered her the warmest smile. “Lady. Welcome.”

Brigid handed Ian a bag, the thing filled with blankets and little clothes and a few oversized shirts. “To start your layette. I’m looking forward to spoiling my niece.”

“And if you have a nephew?” Hunter asked, laughing softly. A girl would have both him and Ian wrapped around her little finger in no time, he was sure.

“Nonsense. Our family always produces girls first.”

“That sounded like an order,” he noted, laughing again. “Now, I know you’ve technically met, but let me introduce you formally. Sister, I’d like you to meet Ian Tumaros, son of Queen Mab of the fairies, and my mate. Ian, this is Brigid, my sister and a goddess in her own right.”

“I’m honored. Thank you for the gifts.” Ian handed her a hank of silk that glowed, literally holding the light. “Hunter says you’re a weaver. My mother spun this with her own hands.”

“Oh, my, I am honored, Ian.
